Coriolis flow meters measure mass flow directly and are independent of changes to fluid properties such as specific gravity, viscosity, and heat capacity. A "U" shaped tube is vibrated at its natural frequency. With flow passing through the tube a phase difference occurs between the upstream and downstream of the tube which is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid flowing through the tube. These flexible instruments provide outputs for mass flow, volumetric flow, density, and temperature. Integral control valves are available which provide closed-loop flow control.
